Book: All the Light We Cannot See
    Author: Anthony Doerr

This book was recommended to me by several people. It is popular with book clubs since its release in May of 2014. I feel it would be a good candidate for a future Dayton’s “Big Read” project.
Most of the book takes place during World II but flips between the start of the war, the invasions, and D-Day. The last chapter takes the reader to 2014 which is a pleasant surprise.
Marie-Laure LeBlanc who is blinded from cataracts at the age of six, lives with her father who is the chief locksmith at the Museum of Natural History. As the Nazis invade Paris, the museum is quickly shut down and a huge blue diamond is smuggled out with one of the museums’ employees.
Marie and her father flee Paris to live with her reclusive great-uncle in Saint-Malo, a walled city by the sea.
Meanwhile, Werner Pfennig, a young German boy who grows up in an orphanage with his sister, is sent away to Hitler’s “National Political Institute of Education” where he studies Engineering and becomes an expert in detecting radio signals.
Their paths finally cross and although their time together is minimal, it is a story of courage and love, especially love for their families.
The story is well told, intriguing, and suspenseful. The chapters are short, a page and a half, and the book gains tremendous momentum. It was difficult to put down as I neared the end.
A “must read” if you haven’t had the pleasure.
