Senator Fred Strahorn takes some hard questions from Stan Evans, local insurance agent

On Friday morning Hickory River opened their doors early to serve up some delicious grub for 25 city officials and Chamber members as a part of the Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce ‘Breakfast Briefing’ where local businesses get together to network and listen to a variety of speakers and topics.

This month’s guest speaker was state Senator Fred Strahorn (D) who represents Ohio’s 5th District which includes half of Darke County, all of Miami County and the northern portion of Montgomery County.

Strahorn spoke to the business owners and City officials about HB 110 (Sewer/waste management), Casinos, the 3-C Rail plans to accept over $400 million in federal stimulus dollars and create 200 jobs on Ohio with a hope to have additional jobs created along the passenger rail line. He was aware of the budget shortfall (calculated to be $17 million) for maintaining the rail line and stated that he hoped that naming rights and concessions would make up that deficit and that it would not fall on Ohio taxpayers to subsidize.

Local business owners stated their concern with the new federal health care legislation as well as whether or not Ohio’s House and Senate would enact laws to uphold the rule of law as it deals with illegal immigration. (Ohio is one of the states currently considering tougher immigration legislation to hold back the growth of illegal aliens into the state)

Also in attendance was Bill Beagle, local resident and former City Council member who is running against Sen. Strahorn in November. Strahorn publicly acknowledged that he will not be carrying out a “dirty” campaign and hopes to become friends with his challenger. The always self-effacing Beagle shared the same and that he looks forward to their campaign and the election in November.

The Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce will welcome Senator Fred Strahorn to Tipp City as a featured speaker in their scheduled Breakfast Briefing on Friday, May 21 at Hickory River Smokehouse from 8AM until 9AM. (Registration begins at 7:30AM)

Senator Fred Strahorn (D) represents the 5th Senate District encompassing Miami and portions of Montgomery and Darke counties.

Prior to joining the Ohio Senate in March 2009, he spent eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives. Senator Strahorn graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Aviation Management. He began his public service career as a Legislative Aide to former State Senators Tom Roberts and Mark Mallory.

The Board of Directors from the Piqua, Troy and Tipp City Chambers of Commerce have joined chambers across the State of Ohio by recently passing resolutions in support of the renewal of The Third Frontier initiative (Issue 1) scheduled to be on the May 4 ballot.

The State of Ohio’s Third Frontier initiative has created more than 48,000 jobs while investing $681 million since 2002 which has yielded $6.6 billion in economic activity.

The proposed state constitutional amendment appearing on the May 4 ballot authorizes the State of Ohio to issue up to $700 million in bonds for the Third Frontier initiative over a four year period in order to provide financial assistance and support for research, product innovation and industries such as manufacturing, agribusiness and alternative energy.

Issue 1 will continue to foster job creation through the advancement of new products and services based on science and technology research and development.  This will, in turn, ensure Ohio’s ability to create and compete for jobs today and in the future. “The Third Frontier initiative is designed to establish Ohio as a global innovation leader and fuel economic growth across the state of Ohio.” Says Matt Owen, President & CEO of the Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce. “The passing of Issue 1 will continue funding of this successful program through 2016, at a level of $700 million over the next four years –  providing job creation and helping economic development in Ohio.”

The Troy, Tipp City and Piqua Area Chambers of Commerce urge citizens to carefully consider the positive implications of this proposal and vote YES on State Issue 1, which will appear on the May 4^th ballot.

Mike Rankin began work as the Assistant Secretary of State for Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner in August of 2009.  In this position, Mike helps to lead and direct the work of the office that oversees all elections statewide and handles various business entity registrations among other things. Mike giving and update on what is going on at the Secretary of States office and be discussing programs that assist small business.

January 1, 2009 – Tipp City, OH - On behalf of the Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors we would like to extend our regrets and prayers to the family and friends of Becky Mohr Brown who passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Ms. Brown was owner of Pack-it, Inc. a packaging design company located off of Seventh Street in Tipp City. Brown was active member of the business community and served as Executive Director of the Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce from 1981-1986. “Becky was not only a great business leader, she was an outstanding community volunteer.” said Matt Owen, President & CEO of the Tipp City Area Chamber of Commerce. “She had a tremendous heart for Tipp City and gave so much to it’s growth and success. She was such a blessing to the Tipp City community and a wonderful person. We will all miss her dearly.”

Ms. Brown was an active Tipp City Rotary and member and served on the Chamber Board of Directors from 2003-2005. Brown was honored as Tipp City’s “Citizen of the Year” in 1989.

Funeral Arrangements: Visitation will be at the Tipp City United Methodist Church from 4-8 pm, Monday, January 4th. The Funeral will be Tuesday, January 5th at 11:00 am in the Tipp City United Methodist Church sanctuary.
