<p>Former Dayton Mayor and Ohio Lt. Governor Paul R. Leonard, was the speaker at the Wednesday January 11th, 2012 Tipp City Rotary Club’s meeting.  Mr. Leonard discussed &#8220;the state of politics&#8221; in this Presidential election year.  He noted that college students are woefully lacking in proper primary and secondary education about government, and especially the American political system.  He criticized the United States Supreme Court decision in <em> &#8221;Citizens United</em>,&#8221; which has opened the floodgates for the flow of money into political campaigns.  Finally, he explained the impact of redistricting of congressional and state legislative districts on the 2012 elections.  Mr. Leonard is currently a professor of Political Science at Wright State University.  Pictured are Program Chairperson Kevin Guigou and Paul Leonard (right).</p>

He discussed how his involvement in the Rotary’s Group Study Exchange Program led to his visiting Egypt in 1991, meeting his wife Sonia and eventually marrying her. He and Sonia have traveled there extensively, and Sonia was trapped in Egypt during the January 2011 overthrow of leader Hosni Mubarak.  He reviewed the causes of the revolution, and what the situation was like with Sonia having a front row seat in the protests, violence and aftermath.  He noted how Egypt’s revolution was similar to the “Occupy” movements in the U.S. and how it used social media in ways other protests in the past have not.  Pictured are Program Chairperson Steve Gellatly (left) and Joe Gibson.</p>

<p>Bradley Warkentine, 2011-2012 Tipp City Rotary Club President, and Gene Luther, a Tipp City resident and retired engineer, shared about a Work and Witness Program they participated in Peru in 2010 with the Tipp City Rotarians at their September 14 meeting. They were part of a team of sixteen members from the Tipp City Church of the Nazarene which built two parsonages on the outskirts of Iquitos, Peru. The parsonages were built in very poor neighborhoods. Iquitos is a city of 400,000 located in the middle of the Amazon. The city is only accessible by water or plane. They also shared about a side trip the team took to Machu Picchu, the famed Inca city located at the top of the Andes mountains.  Pictured left is Bradley Warkentine, Gene Luther, and the spider was brought back from Peru as a memento.</p>
