From Greg Enslen.com:

Events, activities and other hometown items going on in and around Tipp City, Ohio by Greg Enslen

Tippecanoe Farmer’s Market Needs Help

The Market Committee got together last week and started the process of distributing the 2012 Application Packets, so drop me a line if you want one. And we REALLY need volunteers as a couple of our folks dropped off the committee this year—if you have some free time and can help out, please let me know. I guarantee you’ll have a blast!

The 2012 Market is scheduled to begin in June and run through September on Saturday mornings in downtown Tipp City. We’ll feature fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and other items from a great group of vendors. See you at the Market!

It’s hard to believe, but our happy group has already started meeting about this year’s Tippecanoe Farmers’ Market. Going into our sixth season (can you believe it?), we’re gearing up to distribute Application Packets to our past vendors and anyone new interested in setting up and selling foods or other items at our Market. I’ll have more news as it becomes available, but for now you can check out the website at www.tippecanoefarmersmarket.com, which lists all of last year’s vendors, along with the 2011 Application and the rules for being part of the Market. I don’t think the application will change much, but wait until we post the 2012 one before your fill it out and submit it. No need to do things twice!

If you know anyone interested in vending, or are interested yourself, please contact me and we’ll get you on the list for an application. We’re also looking for volunteers, especially to help us set up and break down the Market each week. Interested in helping out? Want to meet some new people and get involved in the community? We could use you!

Troy McDonalds to Be Torn Down

Not sure if anyone else saw this, but the McDonalds in Troy near the highway (it’s just off the exit where you get off to go to Wal-Mart and the other stores) is being torn down at the end of the month!

On March 31, the restaurant will be closed so that it can be razed and rebuilt, with reopening projected for late June, according to Ken Roosa, operations director of The Scott Family McDonald’s, the restaurant’s franchisee.

The new restaurant will reportedly sport a double-lane drive-through and an updated, contemporary dining area. They hope to have the new restaurant ready to open in late June, but a press release stated that the precise opening date is dependent on weather and other variables. The Piqua-based Scott Family McDonald’s operates 14 restaurants in Piqua, Sidney, Greenville, Troy, Tipp City, Huber Heights and Fairborn.

Mayor Drops the Puck at Gems Game

I didn’t see this happen, but I read about it on Tipp News Daily, a great news website run by my friend Mike McDermott:

“Mayor Dee Gillis dropped the ceremonial puck on Sunday afternoon during Tipp City Community Night at the Dayton Gems. Several members of the team and staff jokingly requested Mayor Gillis to drop the puck during every game next season as in this foray, the Dayton Gems scored more points (9-1) than any game of the season this year. Photographer Andrea Nay was at the game to capture the action on the ice.”

The Get Social Show is Back!

The Get Social! Radio Show is back on the air again after taking almost a whole year off. Mike McDermott and I took some time off to pursue our other myriad interests– I wrote a couple of books, and Mike ran for and won a City Council seat—but we’re back on the air on Fridays at noon now, airing live on our website.

Mike McDermott and I host the weekly radio show, where we cover a variety of Tipp City-related topics, including local guests, funny stories and commentary (at least we hope it’s funny), and a round-up of local events and activities.

Check out the website at www.getsocialradio.com – it’s got a calendar for information on upcoming shows and guests, along with the Listen Live option that broadcasts the show directly to your computer when we’re on the air.

Check In With Me

Hear something interesting for “Tipp Talk?” Visit my website at www.gregenslen.com and drop me a line using the “Contact Me” page. And don’t worry—I won’t quote you unless you want me to!

In a joint announcement that marks a historic day for minor professional hockey, two of pro hockey’s most storied leagues, the Central Hockey League (CHL) and International Hockey League (IHL), have entered into a letter of intent to form a “AA” level super league beginning in the 2010-11 season. We plan to play under the Central Hockey League, CHL, moniker, with the identity of the IHL being maintained through various aspects that will be announced in the near future. Leaders of the CHL and IHL will meet during the week ahead to work out the remaining material terms.

“The arrangement between the CHL and the IHL should create an innovative and exciting ”AA” level professional hockey league which is scheduled to start play in the 2010-2011 season,” said Dennis Hextall, IHL Commissioner. “The two leagues each have longstanding histories and share the common goal of solidifying minor professional hockey for our players, our passionate fans and their communities. I believe this arrangement will enable our teams to recruit the best young talent to join our league, with the potential of improving their game and moving up to the higher leagues.”
“This is an exciting day for our teams and markets,” said Duane Lewis, CHL Commissioner. “Both leagues have worked hard to establish tremendous entertainment at a great value for their fans, and by combining our resources we believe we can strengthen those efforts providing greater fan interest as well as a stronger brand.”

Operating guidelines, including the teams competing in the CHL, divisional alignment, the 2010-11 regular season schedule and various hockey operations issues will be discussed at the CHL Summer Conference (league meetings) occurring June 3-5 in Gilbert, Arizona and will continue at the IHL meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 21-23.

The CHL competed with 15 teams during the 2009-10 season with the Rapid City Rush taking home the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup title, while the IHL competed with seven teams with the Fort Wayne Komets winning their seventh Turner Cup Championship and third straight league title.

This will be the 19th season for the CHL whose teams cover nine states. The league saw close to two million fans attend games in each of the last two seasons and has regularly been the North American professional “AA” hockey league leader in average attendance. This season, the CHL was the top “AA” hockey league in playoff attendance. In the league’s history, a total of 88 players have played in both the National Hockey League and the CHL.

The 2010-2011 season will mark the 60th year of professional hockey for the International Hockey League, which was comprised last season of seven Midwestern teams in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. More than 900,000 fans attended IHL hockey games this past season, and a sell-out crowd of 10,480 fans watched the Fort Wayne Komets win the 2010 Turner Cup over the Flint Generals at the Coliseum last month. Nine players who played on IHL teams this past season had prior NHL experience, while many more have played for their respective national teams and professionally abroad. The IHL’s Commissioner, Dennis Hextall, spent more than ten years as a player in the National Hockey League, and serves as President of the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association.

C. Walker Arena in Muskegon tonight to take on the Lumberjacks. Muskegon went on a breakaway and scored just after the halfway mark in the 1st period. With only 50 seconds left in the period A.J. MacLean tied the score for the Gems with assists from Justin McCutcheon and Cody Hamilton. Dayton started strong in the 2nd, scoring only 2:13 to take the lead when Mike Vaskivuo found the net with the aid of Corey Couturier and Iain McPhee, although the Lumberjacks tied it back up only 34 seconds later. Almost eight minutes into the second, Dayton’s Justin McCutcheon would take the puck in with the help of Hamilton and MacLean. Muskegon would then take control of the puck and score 3 times before the period would end, putting the Lumberjacks up 5 -3. During the final period Dayton’s MacLean would score less than 3 minutes into the 3rd, assisted by McCutcheon and Russell Smith. In the final minute of the game Muskegon would find several empty net goals.

Dayton, Ohio - The Dayton Gems were edged out by the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. The Gems couldn’t push through as the final score totaled 4-2 in front of a crowd of 2319.As with the rest of tonight’s game, the first period began fast and furiously.. After several excellent attempts to defend the net by goalie Derek MacIntyre, the Prairie Thunder took the first point of the game at 8:03, and again almost 4 minutes later with a second goal from the same player.

Almost halfway through the second period, Bloomington scored another goal, leaving the Gems behind with a 3-0 lead. However, the Gems’ own Pierce Norton scored the team’s first goal 16 minutes into the second period with assists from Jon Ornelas and Mike Vaskivuo.

In the third it was Preston Briggs scoring the team’s second goal of the night, aided by Corey Couturier and Justin McCutcheon. Disappointingly, Bloomington scored another goal with less than a minute left in the game, pushing the Gems away from a win tonight.

The Air Force was in force for the teams’ Wright Patterson Air Force Base Night. The Honor guard presented the colors, new recruits were sworn in followed by a touching version of God Bless America all under the supervision of the Base Commander, Bradley Spacy.

The evening ended with the special camouflage jerseys being auctioned to the crowd. While the average winning bid was approximately $320, the highest seller was rookie Mike Vaskivuo’s jersey at $670. The final talley reached over $7000 and a portion will be donated to the Air Force Aid Fund.
