You know that things have just gotten crazy when I go out to report on a huge story and don’t quite know which hat I am wearing. That of a reporter for TippNews DAILY, that of a city councilman, that of a small business owner or that of a tax payer and resident of Miami County. All I know is that I need to go and get one of those funny fake mustaches as the kid in me in all of those roles just came out.
Mumford and Sons, one of the hottest UK musical talents out there today announced yesterday that they will be headlining a two day “Gentlemen of the Road” stopover in Troy, Ohio on August 30-31st, 2013.
This Stopover combines the intimacy of a community celebration with the excitement of a world-class music festival. There are only three such Stopovers planned in the United States this year by Mumford and Sons.. and it will be in that town up north in Troy. This whole thing originated with Heritage Ohio and Troy Main Street getting together to submit an application for just such a Stopover. Hundreds of Main Street organizations were vyying for the envious position that Troy now has captured. The scenic river and gentrified downtown shopping space will be packed Labor Day weekend with tens of thousands of visitors over a three day time-frame. This pursuit was a joint and collaborative effort between the City of Troy, Troy Main Street, Troy City Schools (which will host the concerts in the football stadium adjacent to the riverside venue), the Miami County Visitors Bureau, Miami County and the Miami County Conservancy District, along with Jam Productions, one of the top music/concert and performance producers in the world.
Troy officials plan to more than double the population of the City of Troy during the Stopover weekend, and generate an economic impact for the region of an estimated $12.6 million dollars. They estimate 15,000 visitors on that Thursday, 30,000 visitors on Friday and Saturday and about 15,000 to remain on Sunday. Jam Productions intends to invest approximately $1.2 million just to conduct this multi-day event in Troy!
Tickets to this two-day Stopover will be $109, with no additional service fees or hidden charges. Each ticket will include a beautifully designed, commemorative Gentlemen of the Road Stopover Passport. The Troy Stopover will go on sale at 11am, Friday February 8th. Tickets will be EXCLUSIVELY available at http://gentlemenoftheroad.com
“The Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers are all about live music. We get to put them on in towns not normally frequented by touring bands in busses or splitter vans. We deliberately look for towns that have something unique, or some vibe of which they are proud, explore them and enjoy what they have to offer.” <br>- Mumford & Sons
So, this is a huge event for Troy, Miami County and the State of Ohio. I am very proud to live in a place that is seen for what it is.. I am also thoroughly encouraged to see the cooperation and effort displayed by local organizations and Troy’s public officials. This was a mammoth, 3 month negotiation between organizations and Jam Productions, something I don’t think any one of these organizations will take lightly again.
This is also an incredible economic windfall for the City of Troy and our area. Not only do those $12.6 million dollars get distributed across the City’s financial base, lessening the burden on Troy’s taxpayers, but the funds go directly in many cases to local merchants. I’d wager that the Tipp City Holiday Inn as well as several bed and breakfasts are already booked solid for that weekend. Tipp City will see THOUSANDS of overflow visitors on Stopover weekend as they seek out local attractions, great places to eat, fuel up their vehicles for the drive home or stay for the night.
So.. I encourage you to make yourself familiar with Mumford and Sons if you have not already as they are coming to Troy, Ohio and with them bringing an awesome entertainment opportunity for the region. Tickets are on sale on Friday and will sell out very, very quickly.
