For centuries the question of, does Santa Claus really exist, has plagued children from all across the world. We want to believe in the magic of a big man in a red suit, flying in a sleigh led by Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer gang, delivering presents to every home.
Looking back, the whole idea of that really happening may sound a little silly. It’s hard enough to get a pizza delivered in thirty minutes, not to mention a bundle of gifts to every house in one night. Plus, with the additional taken for the milk and cookies. It’s impossible, right?
We all remember the year when it’s realized that the whole Santa thing was a hoax. Christmas is never entirely the same again as it lacks the same degree of magical excitement. It was biggest disappointment I had experienced since learning that the Easter Bunny doesn’t exist either. Don’t parents ever tell the truth?
Believing in Santa Claus, provided a soothing comfort, knowing that if we were nice that our wish lists of gifts would be fulfilled. That somewhere up on the North Pole a team of elves was working to make our toys. As for clothes, our parents could get us that, and Grandma was always good for some underwear, but Santa delivered the good stuff.
Now when we’re all grown up at a time with such economic uncertainty, not knowing how secure our job is, if we have one and bad news is seemingly all around us; we yearn to be able to believe in something magical.
There may not be a jolly old man in a red suit and white beard, but the spirit of Santa Claus lives in our hearts. During the holiday season and beyond we can be the bearer of gifts, like of kindness and generosity to those we encounter. Give the gift of time, by visiting a dear friend or relative that you haven’t gotten to see for awhile. Pick up the phone, everyone has a cell now, and tell a special someone just how much you care.
The Hot Wheels Race Track that I so desperately wanted Santa to bring me when I was ten is now long gone, but the love in which it was given is still with me. I believe in the spirit of Santa and the gifts of that he encourages us to give from within ourselves.
So yes, Virginia and anyone else who wonders, there really is a Santa Claus. And that’s all I have to say about that.
