Nevin Coppock hosted kindergarten screening this week for families with children entering the school this fall and shared several new programs they are planning.
First of all, thanks to the stimulus money, Nevin Coppock hired a new reading specialist who will focus her energy on kindergarten & first graders. She is hired & funded for 100 days, according to Rick Brownlee, Principal. She rounds out a group of three intervention teachers – another reading specialist for the second and third graders and a math specialist for all grades.
Next, a new program for breakfast at school is being considered. 24% of the kids at Nevin are on the reduced fee lunch program. To meet the need for breakfast for this group, and to allow full fee students to purchase breakfast this program is being evaluated now. Surveys were sent home for families to let the school know if they would take advantage of this program or not. Mr. Brownlee was clear that this was not a “Bob Evans breakfast” but a quick bite to help get the kids focused for the morning studies.
Finally, the school has made a change in how they plan to handle 2 hour delays starting in the fall. Normally, when a 2 hour delay is in effect, morning kindergarten is cancelled & afternoon kindergarten continues. Perhaps after the frequency of 2 hour delays his winter, the school decided that the morning kindergarteners were getting the short end of the stick. This fall, if a 2 hour delay is called, then morning kindergarten will run from 11am – 12:50pm and then afternoon kindergarten will run 1:40pm – 3:30pm. So both am & pm will have class – just a shortened version.
The last piece of interesting information from this meeting was that at this time, Nevin has 90 children registered for kindergarten and Broadway has 56. According to these numbers (which of course, may change) there will be 5 classes of Nevin kindergarteners & 4 at Broadway.
