November 3rd Election Results

This entry was posted on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

It was a nail-biter up to the very end. The Tipp City Council results themselves provided a surprise with Joe Gibson topping out the incumbent Pat Hale for first place and former councilman Don Ochs will not be taking a seat at the dais. In order, Gibson, Hale, Black and Budding win City Council seats.

The school board race had Frame and Maus edging out Dehus for the win.

The biggest win of the night had to go to the Tipp City Public Library who’s levy passed by 67%. Mark Mabelitini, library director shared with us “The library will now return to the way that is was before, we will be able to afford office supplies again and provide the kind of service that our residents and patrons have come to expect.”

Bethel Township’s contentious race ended with Hirt and Van Haaren winning over Dick and Fessler.

The Tipp City Charter Amendments were all passed along with the Miami County Parks levy.

Instead of providing our readers with some more to read, I took some video interviews of winning candidates Gibson and Black at their campaign headquarters.

These were the results as of 11PM on Tuesday evening… One of Piqua’s machines wouldn’t read.. but these are the final results for Tipp and Bethel Township..

Congratulations on scooping the news. This is the ONLY source I found reporting the election results on the morning after Tipp City's local elections. I checked KIT-TV and Tipp City's own website. Nothing. Channel 7 is reporting every election for miles around so good luck in catching ten seconds worth of Tipp City results. THIS is the place for news. Great job, Mike!

Wendy, thanks for the nice comments! It is dissapointing to see that no other news service covered Tipp results. Keep reading the TippNews and consider registering to be a contributor. We have 30 local resident/journalists and are growing every day! The more contributors, the better the TippNews gets! Have a great day!!

Had there been coverage of the "charter amendments" and why they were needed? It sure would have been nice to know all the issues and offices that we were to vote on before getting to the polls AND without spending an inordinate amount of time searching the internet. In this day of electronic info, would it have been so hard to pdf the ballot and put it online somewhere so voters could be informed and get answers to their questions before they vote? Is getting an absentee ballot the only way to know the info ahead of time?

  • http://bashfoo.org Mike McDermott

@kathy Your question is best answered at the Board of Elections website. :-) On their website http://miamicountyelections.org all of the candidates, issues, levies and referendums are available to Miami County residents before they vote. This information was posted to their site once the Secretary of State approved all of the candidacies, levies and issues for the ballot. Hope this helps out!

Who were all those rubes hooting and hollering during Gibson's interview? I could hardly hear him! How rude!

  • Kathy Jackson

I typed in the wrong place apparently – I'm not asking myself – I am asking you if you know what the deal was – why they wanted this change?

  • http://bashfoo.org Mike McDermott

I assume you are speaking about the changes to the Charter. The changes were for the most part considered cosmetic. Instead of telling the Mayor and President they could only serve one year in office, it was opened up to be two years.. allowing someone who "just got into the groove" as it were to continue on a second year instead of forcing them to step down. The other changes included explicitly stating what the terms were for the Board of Appeals (upon review by the Review Commission, there were no terms in the Charter for that particular Board, so a term was set) Hope this helps to explain the reasoning for the changes.

So why did council want this changed?

Gibson and Black had quite a crowd there, celebrating their win! I was lucky to catch any silent moment with the two very popular new additions to Council.
