Tipp City Electric Questioned on Rates without Knowledge

So, I am sure most residents have been approached by energy retailers/resellers either in their mailbox, inbox or doorstep. The effort of these resellers are to try to cash in on residents desiring low fixed rates over a long time, vs. paying monthly with the fluctuations in the world energy market. This most recent memo hit my inbox today.

New information submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has found the average area resident, including Tipp City residents, could quickly save hundreds of dollars each year on their electric bills.

But, for many, the process may seem confusing and risky, which is not the case. The attached information and graphic point out easy steps to that can be taken and where to turn for credible, unbiased information.

Tipp City Residents May be Overpaying for Electricity

Actually, because Tipp City is a municipal electric system, no vendor is allowed to offer electric supply to a Tipp City electric customer, within the corporation limits. These resellers can only provide DP&L generated electricity, which, if you ask one of your friends in the Township how much they pay… It can be substantially more than what a Tipp City resident pays. Our own personal household cut $1,500/year from our utility expenses when we moved into town and into the Tipp City Municipal Electric off of DP&L.

What annoyed me most about this letter was that it called out Tipp City (like they did research in order to be “credible and unbiased”) and then plotted real Tipp City data (which they did not). It also heralded Duke Energy’s name which happens to be a big time utility service provider, adding klout to their assertions. So, regardless of how misleading this letter may be, Mr. Brash and Ms. Ryan will no doubt receive some calls inquiring about it.

What the PUCO data actually bears out is that Tipp City residents actually pay 30% less than their neighbors on DP&L. So, the next time someone knocks on your door and asks you if you want to save up to 25% on your electric bill, you can tell them, “No thank you. I am with Tipp City Utilities and am already saving more than that”.  Heck, it’s just one more reason to love living in Tipp City.
