A New Editor, A Renewed Focus

This week I would like to welcome Kathy Goodman to the TippNews editorial staff. Kathy has been the editor for MiltonNews DAILY for the past year and has proven herself as both a capable editor and hyper-local news reporter. Kathy will continue on as the Editor for MiltonNews and as of Monday, 12/15/11 will begin as editor for TippNews.

My new commission as your City Councilman has introduced both a level of complexity to this position as Editor as well as the perceived conflicts of interest. With that said, I will no longer be covering City Council happenings, leaving that responsibility to Council’s newest reporter, Cecilia Fox. She will be covering the Council events for both the Weekly Record Herald as well as TippNews.

News Aggregation and Delivery

The internet is one impressive tool to deliver news to Tipp City residents. TippNews DAILY carves out what’s important and delivers it to 700 email inboxes, and ~4,000 local PC’s, iPads and Mac’s a week, and over 20,000 unique views a month. TippNews DAILY was recently recognized as one of the top 200 citizen journalism news sites in North America by the Reynolds Journalism Institute.

For advertisers it means getting your product in front of lots of local folks. For readers, you won’t be troubled with news or stories you don’t want or need. Even with the editorship change, you will continue to see articles published by your favorites like Mike Woody, Wendy Bauder and Greg Enslen along with the frequent news updates you’ve come to expect from Tipp’s Rotary, Chamber, churches, library and schools.

And with that, our new focus will be in the aggregation and delivery of hyper-local news. Selected stories from local print journalists will begin to appear within the context of TippNews DAILY, enriching our content and providing those print venues with a way to share their content to “us web-enabled folk”. Our advertisers are a critical part of this, so we definitely want to thank them first and foremost for keeping us up and running.

This re-alignment makes the product that you read richer, more in-sync with your lifestyle and a great way to provide your comments on those stories that effect us most.

Will Mike McDermott still write stories?

So what will I be doing?

Well, my focus will be on growing our advertising base and serving as TippNews’ publisher. News articles submitted to TippNews will be reviewed and edited (if necessary) by Kathy Goodman and published. Reporters that currently “auto-pub” their articles on TippNews will retain that right. New contributors are being welcomed on, growing our content. You may still see a story or two published by myself but it will be in the Entertainment, Events or Opinion parts of our site. News will be wholly managed by Kathy Goodman.

New Hyper-Local Project for 2012

Since I have all this time on my hands, I have a new hyper-local project that I am working on with author pal, Greg Enslen. VisitTippCity.org will serve as Tipp City’s travel and tourism site, building external interest in our activities, community and businesses. Eat, work and play in Tipp City all year round is our focus of VisitTippCity.org.

Please ignore the dust as we are just moving into this new and fancy web locale. While not so hyper-local as the Downtown Tipp City Partnership, this site will serve all businesses and venues in Tipp City.

With that.. this is my very last NEWS post in TippNews DAILY.
