AMERICORPS GRANT AWARDED TO LOCAL AGENCY

The Ohio Community Service Council has announced that Council on Rural Services has been awarded funding of $266,000 for the AmeriCorps for Entrepreneurial Success program for 2011-2012. The grant dollars will enable 20 AmeriCorps members to provide academic assistance and teach work readiness in a program that addresses the gap in education and employability skills for teens and young adults in Darke, Miami and Shelby County.

The program will include junior and senior high school components that will work in conjunction with Gateway Youth Program, ACES (Achievement Center for Educational Success), Darke, Miami and Shelby County schools, and AmeriCorps members. The students will obtain hands-on experience in business, academic instruction, and a volunteer support program that features career counseling, support mentoring, and tutoring. Also included is a family advocate to strengthen family involvement and provide social service links.

“The current year’s AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive due to the strong and growing demand by organizations for resources and dwindling government dollars. We are extremely pleased that Council on Rural Services was one of the twenty-six grants awarded in Ohio”, said Kristy Warren, AmeriCorps Project Coordinator.

Council on Rural Services is currently looking for 20 AmeriCorps members that want to become involved with this new direct service program. AmeriCorps for Entrepreneurial Success will help our communities’ young people improve their career success and economic independence and give opportunities for AmeriCorps members to give back. Members can also earn a $5,000 Segal Education Award that can be used to pay for college or graduate school or to repay qualified student loans. Fulltime AmeriCorps members also receive a modest living allowance and health care benefits.

For more information about how to apply for this exciting opportunity, check the programs Facebook page or call Kristy Warren at 937-778-5220 ext. 456.
