Local Church sends $11k to Hurricane Victim Relief Effort

At its weekend worship celebrations, Ginghamsburg Church attendees were given the opportunity to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. As of TODAY, November 5, the free will offering count was up to $11,457 which is being sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)—the not-for-profit humanitarian agency of The United Methodist Church.

Ginghamsburg Teaching Pastor Nick Cunningham explained to his church family this weekend, “There are a lot of brokenhearted people in the northeastern part of our country. As a part of the United Methodist Church, we are a part of an incredible connection and network of churches which allow us to be present and involved in places that have been devastated by natural disasters even when we are unable to be there ourselves. ”

Director of Business Operations Nate Gibson explained, “This is what we’ve always done as a church. It’s our way of best using God’s resources to help those hurting in this time of disaster.”

UMCOR has a proven track record for effective disaster relief case management, and was selected by FEMA to receive a $66 million grant to help 100,000 families scattered across the US who were left especially vulnerable by Hurricane Katrina. Ginghamsburg Church has a long history of helping our nation in times of disaster, leading 70 rebuilding teams to New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina.

Since 1940 UMCOR’s mission—providing relief in disaster areas, aiding refugees and confronting the challenge of world hunger and poverty—has helped to heal the hurts of humanity in nearly 100 countries. When you give money to the United Methodist Committee on Relief one hundred percent of your tax-deductible gifts go to the emergency or project that you designate. UMCOR’s administrative costs come from other sources. Visit UMCOR on the web at umcor.org.
