Got Milk? The breast feeding debate

Normally most men have to be dragged to the mall, but an exception was likely made on Sunday, Feb. 20 as a group of women staged a gathering of breast feeders in the food court of Fairfield Commons. Feeding time was held to raise awareness of the fight for breast feeding in public to be accepted.

The debate is nothing new, and is an issue that will never fully be agreed upon by everyone. Personally, I’m not offended if a woman decides to let it all hang out in public, as its better than hearing the cries of a hungry baby. Like with everything else a certain amount of common sense needs to be used, I wouldn’t suggest breast feeding while grocery shopping, (especially in the freezer section), but while strolling through the park is acceptable due to attracting less attention.

Supporters argue that breast feeding is just a natural human act, so is passing gas but I try not to do it in a crowded room. While not intended to carry any sexual connotation, we live in a society where when a woman’s breast is revealed, even partially, it’s going to attract a males attention. As will as rise the ire of a jealous or overly prudish woman. Women should be aware of their surroundings when they decide it’s serving time, and consider if it’s a place where there actions may be noticed. Unlike with flatulence, breast feeding can’t be blamed on the person next to you.

Discretion is a major factor in the issue, granted I’m not equipped to speak with any real authority on the subject, but it seems that with the proper use of blanket the act could be made almost unnoticeable. If no cover is used, it almost resembles a free peep show. Money won’t be thrown, but some stares will. If breast feeding is just about providing the proper nutrients, then keep it at that, and don’t make it anything obscene.

A common argument is, ‘I wouldn’t want to eat in a bathroom, so neither should my baby.’ I would never expect anyone to designate a public bathroom as a dining room, it’s where food should come out, not in. There are other options though, such as in the lobby when at the movies, in the narthex at church rather than in the sanctuary. Anywhere, that isn’t the central hub of activity. If not, just expect the possibility of some cold stares, along with some delighted ones; or maybe being asked to leave.

Is breast feeding in public a crime? No. Neither is passing gas in a crowded room, well except for maybe after having bean soup. Where and when an individual partakes in either activity is their choice, but chances are not everyone will be pleased.
