Oscar Predictions

It’s that time of year again, when I realize that my movie viewing choices do not match with the Academy, as I haven’t seen most of the Oscar nominated films. While I was enjoying the hilarity of ‘Dinner with Schmucks’, I should have been following the drama of ‘The Kings Speech.’ Despite my limited knowledge on the subject I will still offer my annual picks for the major categories.

Best Actor:  Javier Bardem (Biutiful). I can’t vote for a movie in which the title is misspelled. Spell check anyone?
Jeff Bridges (True Grit) He just won last year in the same category, give someone else a chance.
James Franco (127 Hours) A sentimental favorite due to starring in the short lived but excellent ‘Freaks & Geeks.’ Might have won, but he only gave his arm for the role, not his leg too.
Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network). I don’t ‘Like’ his chances, but just a nomination has raised his status.
Colin Firth (The King’s Speech). I th-th-think Firth will b-b-be the winner, as it’s the type of uptight serious dramatic role that the Academy loves.

Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone). Has anyone even seen this movie?
Nicole Kidman: (Rabbit Hole). Sorry, but you were married to Tom Cruise for awhile.
Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine). Sounds like a good movie, and have come a long way since ‘Dawson’s Creek’ but not yet the biggest fish in the ocean.
Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right). She could possibly be the winner, and supposedly makes a believable lesbian but I could pretend to be married to Julianne Moore.
Natalie Portman (Black Swan). Deserving for making me interested in seeing a movie about ballet.

Best Supporting Actor: John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone). Who?
Jeremy Renner (The Town). I at least know some people who have seen this movie.
Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right) A good role, but not worth bringing home the gold.
Christian Bale (The Fighter) It will be a tough duel, but don’t think he’ll deliver the TKO.
Geoffrey Rush (The Kings Speech). Every year there is a movie that seems to dominate, and I believe its ’The Kings Speech’ this time.

Best Supporting Actress:  Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) If you have seen this movie…get a life or join the Academy.
Helena Bonham Carter (The Kings Speech) Is ignored again for Harry Potter.
Amy Adams (The Fighter)…Melissa Leo (The Fighter)…Will knock each other out of the competition.
Hailee Seinfeld (True Grit). I’ve actually heard people talk about her performance, which is more than I can say about the others.

Best Picture: Winter’s Bone….Really? How can this little heard of movie get so many nominations in major categories when movies that actually won at the box office get nothing?

127 Hours…One of these days I’ll spend two hours to watch it.

True Grit…You don’t miss with the ‘Duke.

The Kids Are All Right…Just being ‘all right’ isn’t enough to win the Oscar.

Inception…I did actually see this movie, but not sure what I saw.

Toy Story 3…The other nominated movie I’ve seen, and honestly probably contains more suspense, drama, and laughs than all the other movies combined but due to being animated doesn’t stand a chance.

The Fighter…Critically acclaimed, but not the main event.

Black Swan…Is far from the ugly duckling, but won’t get the golden egg.

The Social Network…Didn’t see how a movie could be made about Facebook, but was proven wrong. I’ve yet to see it, but is on my agenda, would be nice if it won as the majority of the population share a connection with it, but I wouldn’t bet my Bejeweled Blitz prizes on it.

The Kings Speech…As I stated before, I believe it’s the year of The Kings Speech and is the type of movie that the Academy supports.

Personally, the selection of nominated movies doesn’t make me excited to watch the Oscar’s. I think the telecast would be so much more entertaining if popular films are included, rather than the critically acclaimed. Wouldn’t a race between ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’ be more entertaining. Those are movies that people are passionate about, I know nobody who is on Team King, but they would be destroyed by Team Edward anyway.

The Top 5 movies at the box office in 2010 were Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 2, The Twilight Sage: Eclipse and Harry Potter. The only one nominated in a major category is Toy Story 3.  While The Kings Speech is #25, The Fighter is  #39 and Winter’s Bone isn’t even in the Top 100. Of course all people really care about at the Oscar’s anyway, is what people are wearing.

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 8pm on ABC.
