Rachels Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachels Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine School shootings in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were different, who were picked on by others, or who were new at her school.


Shortly before her death she wrote:


“I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”


Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come into contact with every day. Rachels Challenge renews our hope that our life has meaning and purpose. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities. Through her example, Rachels Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year.


Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachels Challenge into their schools because of escalating problems such as: bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and increased disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations, trainings, community events, and professional development, Rachels Challenge provides the sustainable solution.


The elements of the school improvement process are designed to create a culture of kindness and compassion and to equip students and adults with resources to insure that their schools are safe, caring and supportive learning environments essential for academic achievement.
