Salt Dough – Keepsakes Made Easy

“For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does ‘just for fun’ and things that are ‘educational.’ The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play. ~ Penelope Leach (psychologist and author)

All too often you hear the stereo typical comment of how staying at home with young kids is not a tough job. Little do they know just how much thought and energy goes into your day and how often, a free moment is unheard of. YOU are in charge of molding a young mind. It is tough at times, but one of the most rewarding experiences I have had the privilege to enjoy.

This column is dedicated to finding rewarding, stimulating activities you and your little one can do at home and revealing quick tips & tricks to make keeping your home in order a little bit easier.

The first thing I’d like to introduce you to is salt dough. Here’s why: this very pliable dough can be used for just about any activity you can think of from little figurines for a story box, to keepsake foot/hand prints of your little one. It’s super easy, and fairly cheap considering most households have the items needed on hand. By doing this activity with your little one(s), they are able to improve upon motor skills, creativity, math, and their sensory skills. And it’s such an easy project that both you and your kids can enjoy!

Salt dough recipe:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 cup plain flour (not self rising)
  • 1 cup salt

Mix these items together in a large bowl and knead it until it is smooth. Make sure it has a stretchy consistency, if not you can add a little more flour. If it is too dry or crumbly, add a bit more water.

Your little one can help in the kneading process as it is a great sensory play experience.

Once the dough is kneaded you can then either flatten it out in any shape of your choosing using household items or just your hands. You can go with a circle by using a shallow bowl to form, or make an animal of your choosing with either cookie cutters or by hand.

After forming your shapes, place them on baking parchment, or even foil(non stick) and bake @ 200 degrees for about 3 hours or until the dough has hardened/dried out. If after 3 hours they are still a bit doughy, flip them over and let them cook for up to an additional 2 hours.

Once they are done you can allow them to cool for a couple hours and then paint! Usually my helper and I prepare these the night before, so that the next day they are good to go for our painting sessions!

The fun part! Decorate them any way you choose, and afterwards enjoy them for many years to come. In this case my son decided he wanted to make the hand keepsake for his Grandpa. Above you can see the salt dough dry, before little Picasso has worked his magic.  This project is something that can be done as a christmas gift from your little one(s) or even as a gift to loved ones just to show them you care.

I hope you and your kid(s) give this a try and let me know what you think!
