When Ellen Hazel says “We’ll get it done,” it always gets done. Colleagues call her a whirlwind and admit they would be lost without her. Her faith motivates her to serve others with compassion and without judgment, never tiring of spreading God’s love to those around her.
Tipp City United Methodist Church has been the center of Ellen’s world for the past 45 years. She has served as president of the church women’s group. Every December, Ellen helps organize and bake for the holiday Cookie Walk, which raises money for local charities. Through her church, Ellen became involved with Oasis House, an organization that supports women who have survived human trafficking and other abuse. Each spring, she volunteers with United Methodist Women, the nation’s largest faith organization for women, to set up the church hall for the Oasis House Tea and Silent Auction, which raises thousands of dollars for its programs. Ellen cooks for special events, mentors women through the YES (You’re Extra Special) ministry, and sends cards with encouraging messages to those who are struggling. “Reaching out is what God says we’re to do,” she explains.
Ellen has also shared her commitment to service with The Clothesline thrift store, Upper Valley Medical Center, Sister Cities of Vandalia, Campfire Girls, and local schools and literacy programs. It’s clear that Ellen has a servant’s heart, and the energy to keep going.
