October 25
by Greg Enslen

Tippecanoe HarvestFest 2009 is this week! Get your tickets early at the Tipp City Chamber or on the night of the event! Presented by the Downtown Tipp City Partnership, the Third Annual Tippecanoe HarvestFest celebrates the creepy season with an outdoor, downtown party, complete with beer and live music from Dirtybone! The frivolity starts at 7pm and runs until 11, with $5 admission and $3 beer. And come in costume – there will be a contest with prizes! See you there….for more information, see www.tippecanoeharvestfest.com!

City Council elections are coming up, and I got a very interesting question from one of my inquiring readers: they wanted to know more around Katie Black volunteering to not accept the City-provided Health Insurance and wondered if any of the other candidates had also pledged to turn down the insurance. The answer is – I don’t know. I’ve sent out a query to all the candidates and I’ll report on their responses next week.

On the Monday episode of the Get Social Radio Show, we’ll be interviewing serious Hollywood stars! Mike McDermott and I will be phoning into LA LA LAND to interview the cast and director of the upcoming film “Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day,” which is being released in November. We’ll be interviewing them on a special Monday episode that will run from 5pm to 8pm – tune in to find out what’s going on? We have a “call-in” window and will be spending the rest of the show discussing the upcoming levy issues and several other topics. It won’t be boring – I promise! Call in or join us in the chat room at www.blogtalkradio.com/GetSocial.

Winters Yuletide Gathering is coming up November 14 and 15. Remind your guests and out-of- town visitors about the upcoming annual Winter’s Yuletide Gathering event and shopkeepers open house. Every dollar you spend locally helps keep money (and tax dollars) in our community and support local businesses and shopkeepers. So skip that next trip to Target and spread some money around downtown – or don’t complain when our cute downtown shopping district turns into an ugly strip of abandoned buildings. Nearly all our merchants will be offering holiday specials; plus, there will carolers, carriage rides, and snow! Actually, I can’t guarantee snow, but the rest is all true!

Thanks to all the great people who put on the Tippecanoe Farmers’ Market, which held its final Market of the 2009 season on Saturday, October 2. If you would like to see it return next year or would like to volunteer to help with it, please shoot me an email and I’ll pass it along to the Farmers’ Market committee. And thanks to the community for supporting this wonderful local event all summer – it was a blast!

Lastly, if people are really concerned about eating healthier and living longer, then I have a question. The current thinking is that salt is bad for you and should be used in moderation, whereas pepper is a spice used for flavoring and has no negative health impacts. So why are there 50 holes in the top of the salt shaker and only 10 in the pepper? I have to shake and shake and shake to get my pepper out (I love pepper) but the salt FLIES out of the shaker like it just got pardoned by the governor. Here is my suggestion to the restaurants out there – switch your tops! We can tell which is which by the color of the spice – no one counts the holes anymore unless it’s Thanksgiving and you’re at your parent’s house and Mom has dug out the matching turkey shakers. I think this is all a hold-over to the old days when people ate a LOT more salt.
