Ray Holmes, program host, invited Pete Jackson, a member of the Troy Noon Optimist Club, as our guest speaker at the January 30 West Milton Rotary Club meeting. Pete talked about the history of the Soap Box Derby in Miami County, from the years of 1956 through 1983. Their club is attempting to raise interest in the county to resume the derby again, hopefully as soon as this summer. They have scheduled the first race in Tipp City and then Troy. They are hoping to find support and interest for a race in West Milton. The international Soap Box Derby is the second week of July. Participants can be from seven to eleven or eleven to fifteen and can use an inexpensive Derby Gokit. Adults, service clubs and any interested group are encouraged to support this effort of bringing back the Soap Box Derby in Miami County. It is important for all of us to be in the “kid business” and to bring back family involvement, family values and respect for their country. Two members of the Milton-Union Interact Club were also in attendance, Kenton Dickison and Sam Morgan.
The West Milton Rotary Club welcomes the West Milton City Manager, Matt Kline, as a new member of our club as well as into Rotary International. Matt was sponsored by member and police chief, Garry Kimpel. Matt was accepted into the club on January 30, 2012 and is pictured with his sponsor, Garry Kimpel and member Allen Smith, substituting for membership chairman, Chris Long.
