We need a hero [costume]

It’s the time of year to think about costumes.  We love Halloween and usually start talking about ideas in late August.  It got me to thinking about super heroes, and what it would be like to be one.   I could be Super Mom for Halloween!

First, I’ll need a costume.  It will not be the typical red and blue spandex and tights. Sorry, but that’s just not going to happen.  I’ll start with the most comfortable blue jeans – these will never wear out and will fit perfectly, always (does anyone know where I can buy those?).  I’ll top it off with a super-soft, heather green long-sleeved T-shirt, with my emblem emblazoned upon it.  I’m still working on the emblem, feel free to nominate your ideas!

My shoes will be red. And shiny.  I love red shoes but never have the nerve to buy and wear them, but as Super Mom, I’ll be able to pull it off!  With them I will have the power of perfect balance, not because I’m a clutz (ok, that, too) but to balance work, house, husband and kids all effortlessly and with good grace.  Actually maybe they will be red boots!  Perfect!

Just to clarify, no hat.  I rarely wear one, other than  my favorite Tigger baseball cap.  Besides, the eyes in the back of my head would be covered and that just won’t do.

Next, the all important cape.   It will flow beautifully behind me as I run from work to errands, from sports to school.  With it I will find the ultimate patience that I know must be inside me somewhere.   When my cape is hanging from my shoulders, I will not yell, or even look upset when anything is spilled, broken or late. Not even when the villains fight or roll their eyes at me.  Oops, errr, I meant the kids, of course.

Last but not least, the all important super power.  I’ve given this one some relatively serious thought.  Being able to affect time would be nice, but like all powers you have to be careful – the temptation to keep the kids little would be a hard one to get past.   After rejecting several options, I’ve settled on the ability to be in two places at once.  Girls’ games in Milton and Miami East, no problem.  Business trip in Wausau, Wisconsin and teacher conferences here at home, I’ll be there — plural!!

So that’s me, all decked out.  A cross between Underdog (my favorite) and Sweet Polly Purebred.  Well, sort of.  Have no fear, Super Mom is here.  If only for a day.  Happy Halloween.
