Who was your teen idol crush? I remember having a poster of Kirk Cameron on my door! He wasn’t a pop singer but he sure was cute on the TV Show Growing Pains. I also had a framed picture of “Donny and We” – that’s what I called Donny and Marie Osmond (I was a little younger when I loved them). Now I have an eight year-old who I am sure will have a teen idol she “loves” soon.
Life as a Teenager
The book, I Think I Love You, is a fun book about two friends who “loved” David Cassidy. They were in their early teens living in England when David announces his fair well tour and came to London for one of his last concerts. As they are reading everything they can find about their teen idol, they enter a contest from a magazine about David Cassidy. The grand prize…getting to meet David Cassidy!!! Years later Petra, while going through her mother’s closet, finds a letter that her mother had intercepted telling her that she and her friend, Shannon, that they won the contest. Petra, who is now pushing 40, going through a divorce and has a daughter who “loves” Leonardo DiCaprio, contacts the publisher of the magazine that ran the contest and explains how she just found the letter.
Meeting an Idol
With such a neat back-story, the publisher helps Petra and Shannon finally realize their dream, sending them to America to meet their teen idol while he is performing in Vegas! Amazingly, through this journey they also realize that the person, who works for the publisher and is escorting them to Vegas, was the real David Cassidy! Bill wrote for the magazine in the 1970s and was assigned to pen all letters written by David Cassidy. The “image” of David Cassidy was all made up!
True Love
After meeting David Cassidy, Petra finds herself back in London only to open her suitcase and find a letter from Bill (or should we call him David) expressing his love for her. Turns out that Petra’s love for David was real and not just a teen crush!
