Council Decides To ‘Deck The Halls’

City Council probably won’t pull the plug on downtown holiday lighting, but likely will cut back to tree lights only. Council members held an extensive discussion Monday, Aug. 16 on how to handle a proposed new three-year contract with Christmas Décor of Troy before appearing to reach a compromise. A vote will be held Sept. 20 on an agreement with the company to decorate and maintain 21 trees with approximately 35,700 clear mini lights for $20,278 in each of the next three years.

New Life For Old Market

Concept plans for bringing new life to the former Town & Country Market call for dividing the building into four retail spaces, including a new home for the Broadway Hair Studio.
Debbie and Michael Dungan, who are trying to purchase the building at the corner of Dow and Second streets, shared the concept plans with the city Planning Board on Aug. 10.
The discussion was part of board consideration of a proposed site plan and request for a partial waiver of off-street parking requirements for future retail uses within the building.
The board supported both requests.

Lady Devils Gunning For Another CBC Triumph

Despite summer heat and humidity, the Tippecanoe tennis team followed its regular two-hour morning practice session last week at the Tippecanoe Middle School courts.
More than 20 girls focused on the task of making solid tennis strokes. Whether it was serves, ground strokes, volleys or overheads, the common goal under the watchful eye of tennis coach Jeanne Koch is consistency.
“We drill on all aspects of the game, as well as play games toward the end of our practices,” Koch said. “That way, the girls can continually work on their games and get better, which is what we all want.”

We Care Arts At Zion Lutheran Church

Art has provided an outlet for human emotions throughout the ages. Understanding that, Terry Schalnat, executive director of We Care Arts based in Kettering, decided to get involved in helping people who needed a place to go to get out of the house.
“We Care Arts was started to provide a place of acceptance for people who had no place to go – the underemployed, the unemployed – people who were stuck at home,” Schalnat said. “We provided a place to come where they could work out their anxieties by hammering, sawing, and other activities.”

The program made its way to Tipp City about four years ago.
“Zion Lutheran Church contacted us. They knew about us,” Schalnat said. “They said they had added on to and renovated their building and wanted an art program. They said they wanted a program for children who are developmentally disabled, challenged, and physically limited.”

Acclaimed Vietnam Memoir Released In Paperback This Week, Pays Tribute To Tipp City

Back when Mike Jackson was telling stories to family and friends about “funny things that happened to me in Vietnam,” he had little inkling how those stories would evolve or that they would lead to a healing experience for thousands of veterans across the United States.
This week, Jackson’s critically acclaimed Vietnam memoir, Naked In Da Nang (Zenith Press, 2004) was released by Zenith Press as a soft cover edition. The book, which was selected by the Military Book Club as its “Editor’s Choice” alternate in 2006 was never intended to be anything other than a simple story of military service as seen through the eyes of “one little guy from Tipp City, Ohio.”
It became, however, the inspiration for the national Operation Welcome Home celebrations for Vietnam veterans. The book helped to fund many of those celebrations, as well as the creation of the American Veterans Institute.
