Seven Tippecanoe Students Heading For State Science Day

Ten Tippecanoe High School, Middle School & L.T. Ball Intermediate School students competed in the Ohio Academy of Science, West District Science Day, held at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio on Saturday, March 19, 2011.  More than 440 students from seven counties participated in the all day event.  Students exhibited projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics which they worked on from September through February of this year.

All Tippecanoe students who received a superior rating at the Tipp City Schools Science Fair in February were eligible to compete at the District Science Day.  Tipp City students participating at District were (THS) Andrew Abboud, Zach Robbins, and Elizabeth Walker; (TMS) Luke Becker, Adam Buynak, Thomas Chaney, Allison Chitwood, and Samantha Rowland; (LTB) Alissa Buynak and Natalie Seeman.

Of the ten Tipp City students, seven received superior ratings at the District Science Day and were selected to proceed to the State Science Day held at The Ohio State University in Columbus on Saturday, May 07, 2011, where $2.3 million in scholarships and special awards will be presented.  Those students were Andrew Abboud, Luke Becker, Adam Buynak, Thomas Chaney, Allison Chitwood, Zach Robbins, and Samantha Rowland.

Students presented with special awards were:  Andrew Abboud, U.S. Metric Association Award; Luke Becker, Broadcom Masters STEM Award Certificate; Thomas Chaney, Levin Porter Architcts Material Science Award (Dayton Dragons tickets); Allison Chitwood, Buckeye Women in Science/Engineering/Research Award ($100 / summer science camp) and Broadcom Masters STEM Award Certificate; Samantha Rowland, Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology Award ($100 savings bond) and Broadcom Masters STEM Award Certificate.

All of the students did a great job presenting their projects and should be congratulated.

Tippecanoe Science Student Goes International – Again!

The most prestigious honor awarded at each District Science Day is the selection of two students who will represent that district at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, which provides an annual forum for more than 1,600 high school students from over 60 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research. The Intel ISEF is the premiere global science competition for students in grades 9–12

There are currently twelve qualifying Ohio districts which when combined see over 3000 student projects presented statewide.  Each district may designate two students to attend the ISEF, resulting in only twenty-four Ohio students being chosen to represent the state each year.

This year the THS Science Department and the Tippecanoe STEAM Boosters, Inc. are proud to announce that for the second year in a row, THS senior, Andrew Abboud will be representing Tippecanoe High School, the Ohio Academy of Science, and the State of Ohio at the 2011 International Science & Engineering Fair, May 8-13, in Los Angeles, California.  Andrew’s project studied the protective characteristics of pigments in certain bacteria against ultraviolet radiation.  He will be competing at the State Science Day on May 7 in Columbus, and leaving the following day for California.

Congratulations Andrew on another job well done!
