Hunt for Pink October

There are certain signs of October; the weather is cooler, Haunted Houses are open, the baseball season is winding down and everything is pink. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the entire country seems to be painted pink.

First, let me say that I totally support the fight against breast cancer and intend no offense to those who have been affected by the disease in any way, which is most everyone. I feel kind of guilty for saying anything critical of the more than worthy cause, but do feel like it’s a little overdone. This is coming from a ‘breast man,’ do you think I watched ‘Baywatch’ for Pamela Anderson’s acting ability?

There is a line between making the public aware and burying them with the information. I feel completely covered in pink, if it hasn’t been already, I suspect the White House will be painted pink by the end of the month. While watching football on Sunday, I could hardly tell the Bengals from the Browns, not because they were both equally bad, but from all the pink on their uniforms. Each player had pink gloves, pink shoes, pink hats for when on the sidelines and the goal posts were even covered in pink. I occasionally flipped over to check on the Reds (Central Division Champions) and they all had pink on their gloves. In addition, the comics in many papers next Sunday are going to be all pink.

There are some possible dangers to such an overexposure of pink as it could lead to awkward questions from a five year old child. ‘Mommy, why did Big Bird turn pink?’…‘For breast cancer awareness month.’ To which the child would ask, ‘what’s a breast?’ Their minds would then forever be corrupted with the knowledge of the female anatomy and might as well start watching Katy Perry videos.

I realize that breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women, and I want nothing more than for a cure to be found…Save the boobies! I too have lost loved ones to the terrible disease, but have to Alzheimer’s, lung cancer, diabetes, mental disabilities and other illnesses as well. They however don’t get nearly as much public awareness, minus Muscular Dystrophy that gets a Labor Day telethon that nobody watches.

I applaud the efforts and accomplishments of those behind the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, they do great work. Never did I think I would complain about being overwhelmed with anything concerning breasts, but enough is enough with the pink.
