Nevin Coppock – Cultural Lunch Day

Nevin Coppock third graders enjoyed “Cultural Lunch Day” on Friday, March 26.

Cultural Lunch is actually an entire day’s activity that helps all 100 third graders to be exposed to cultures of different countries. This year we learned about Lebanon, South Korea, America, Italy, Thailand and Turkey. The speakers that represented the various countries brought in samples of food to taste, maps, artifacts, music, video, PowerPoint presentations, pictures etc. to acquaint the children with the countries’ culture. This activity covers a third grade objective of exposing the students to different cultures around the world. The speakers are arranges by Mrs. Strunk. Mrs. Strunk tries to get speakers from countries that are represented in our school population.  Mrs. Manes and Mrs. Porto shared Italy with the students and had wonderful pictures actually taken in Italy on visits. They made a pasta dish that the children loved. Mrs. Helga Thornton and Mrs. Diana Bee presented Thailand. Mrs. Thornton made delicious food for the children to sample and brought in pictures of her travels through Thailand. She had books that the children could see that she had used to learn the language. Eli Morando’s parents Rob and Leah Morando presented South Korea’ Eli’s dad actually was born in South Korea and came to the USA when he was 4. He talked about the differences of the two nations. The food was delicious that his wife had prepared. He taught the children some words in Korean and shared pictures and artifacts from South Korea.  Lori Thomas’ husband is from Lebanon and she always brings cheesy bread, hummus, and baklava to tantalize our taste buds.  Finally, Erdem Guzelgunler’s parents Yilcan and Donna sent in information about Turkey.  Mrs. Lammers our GIS presented and the children enjoyed eating Turkish delight and learning about the crazy sport of oil wrestling.  It was a great day and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves!  Our thanks go out to our parent teacher club who generously supported this day.
