Silence is golden for Blue Man Group

Some things in life never change, I will always be known as being quite. The ’gift of gab’ is a trait that I never received. Its often been considered a burden, as I’ve found it hard to maintain the interest of others in me. After a few moments of awkward silence they are bored by my listening skills and would rather try their chances at talking over someone else. However, a solution to my social demise may have finally been found…paint my body blue.

Since 1991, the Blue Man Group (BMG) has entertained the entire world without uttering a single word. In Dayton, at the Schuster Center through Oct. 3, the Blue Man Group captivated a sold out crowd for nearly two hours on opening night, while never using their voice. They are able to speak volumes just through body movement and expressive eyes.

Words are used in the show, both by recordings and some that require reading, but nothing speaks louder than the actions of the BMG. They are the leaders of the performance, which is a visual explosion of vibrant colors and sounds of percussion. Laughs, intrigue and awe inspired wonder are a constant from start to finish.

This was my third time seeing the BMG, the previous two were arena show at the Nutter Center, so this was my first theatre presentation. There are some differences between the two, but many of the same elements are included, such as the rules of attending a rock concert.

Though their mouths aren’t used for speaking, they are vital for one of the most popular acts of the show. You will be amazed by the number of marshmallows thrown into one of their mouth. Long past when its believed that no more could possibly be caught, they continue to find a way into his mouth.

A lucky member of the audience gets to enjoy a romantic meal of Twinkie’s with the BMG. A healthy dose of side splitting chuckles are also served up as a number of hidden objects are pulled out to be used. The main course is so good that the BMG eats it twice.

Nowhere else will you see music made from crunching on cereal, paint splattered from drumming and more names for your backside than ever imagined. Yes, the show is educational too.

The finale unites the entire audience into the festivities and highlights the shows sense of magic; Those who have never seen the BMG will be unsure of what to expect, but by the end will be amazed by the experience.

The Blue Man Group is proof that words need not be spoken to be entertaining, now all I need is just a little of their talent. Enjoy the silence of the BMG at the Schuster Center through October 3.
