Allen Smith, program host, invited Tom Koogler, Milton-Union athletic director, as our guest speaker at the August 15 West Milton Rotary Club meeting. He spoke on “The Importance of Athletics in our Society.” While many athletes are in the news for something negative, most of our athletes, especially those in high school, are very responsible and good role models. There is an emphasis at Milton-Union to be good student athletes and set goals in the classroom as well as in athletics. Other points made by Mr. Koogler were the safety guidelines and other rules and regulations established by the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association), concussion management, sports medicine and proper training, the impact of technology in athletics and education in general, the impact of year round athletes and more structure such as AAU programs, the role of women’s sports today, and the importance of an athlete keeping a balance in priorities of family, studies and practice. He also told the Rotarians about the M-U Athletic Facebook page and the importance of carrying over our traditions when we move into the new building.
