The Newton Leo Club was named “Best Leo Club in Ohio” at the recently concluded Ohio Lions State Convention in Columbus. A Leo Club is a youth organization of Lions Clubs International. The Newton Leo Club is sponsored by the Lions Club in Troy and operates out of Newton High School in Pleasant Hill. Leo clubs encourage youths to develop leadership skills and qualities by participating in social services activities. The Newton club won the award because of their volunteer activities at St Patrick’s soup kitchen, the Pleasant Hill food pantry, the Salvation Army’s toy drive, Newton Elementary School Easter egg hunt and Halloween safety program. Club members raise money by participating in fund-raising events jointly with the Troy Lions Club, such as, their concession booth at the local Strawberry Festival. The Newton Leo Club has an average of 30 members in grades 9 through 12. The Leo Club’s advisor is Scott Davis, a teacher at Newton High School and a member of the Troy Lions Club. Davis has been with the Leo club since its beginning in 2002. The Leo motto is Leadership-Experience-Opportunity.
The Troy Lions Club is a non-profit community service organization serving Troy, Covington, Pleasant Hill, Piqua, Tipp City, and surrounding areas of Miami County since 1942.
