Obit: John Ashworth Smith

John Ashworth Smith of Tipp City, Ohio, age 75, lost his battle with cancer at Hospice of Dayton on May 15, 2013.

Born September 6, 1937 in Indianapolis, IN to John Henry and Georgie Smith, he attended Carmel High School and graduated from General Motor’s Institute on August 1, 1969 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  On January 28, 1961, John married Victoria (Vicki) Verplank Smith.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 until 1961, attaining the rank of Airman Second Class.

John had a life-long career in material science.  He lived in Carmel, IN, Maple Grove, MN, Miami, FL and worked at General Motors, National Standard, Cordis Dow, and Fukuvi USA, Inc. until retiring to Tipp City, Ohio.  He spent his retirement years becoming Microsoft Certified, perusing an interest in computer technology and volunteering.

John was an active member of First Christian Church of Huber Heights for sixteen years.  He contributed to the church by assisting in the multi-media department, lead a men’s study group, enjoyed helping at vacation bible school and countless other calls to service.

John will be especially remembered for sharing his expertise and quest for knowledge with the community by serving on the Board of Directors from 2006-2012 and President in 2013 of Tippecanoe Steam Boosters; an organization that was near and dear to his heart for its promotion of youth into the fields of Science, Technology, Math And Engineering.  John was a volunteer for the Anam Cara Program at Good Samaritan Hospital of Dayton, providing spiritual care for patients with acute, chronic and terminal illnesses.

John is survived by his loving wife Vicki Smith, Tipp City, OH; Children Scott V. Smith and his wife Tania and children Quin and Arden Smith of Tipp City, OH; Mariann Schafer and husband Jason of Portland, OR; and Jason Smith and his wife Pamm and children Cassandra, Dalton, and Kyle of Roseburg, OR; his brother Robert and wife Wanda of Florence, AZ.

Memorial Services will be held at First Christian Church of Huber Heights, 6114 Fishburg Road, Huber Heights, OH 45424. Relatives and friends are welcome at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, May 24, 2013.

Memorial contributions are welcome in lieu of flowers at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; Tri-State Chapter at 4370 Glendale Milford Road; Cincinnati, OH 45242 and Tippecanoe STEAM Boosters, Inc., 1470 W. Main Street, Tipp City, OH 45371.
